Medical billing clerks are responsible for all aspects of medical billing and payments. This primarily involves working with patients to collect payment on outstanding medical bills. They answer patient questions regarding repayment methods and billing disputes as well as work with insurance companies to collect payment on medical bills and post payments. Medical billing clerks analyze older billing records and make recommendations for payment recovery; they may refer bills for collection after exhausting all attempts to contact patients. They manage billing records (ensuring the accuracy of all information) and work with aged trial balance (ATB) reports to manage claims.
The majority of their time is spent working with billing records and patients to resolve disputes, answer inquiries, and collect payments. They work closely with medical personnel to ensure proper billing, checking that all appropriate procedures and no erroneous charges are included in the final bill presented to the patient. They present information and reports regarding outstanding and completed billings to senior hospital staff. Medical billing clerks must hold a high school diploma or equivalent. Typically, this is an entry-level position. Medical billing clerks must have excellent customer service skills; proficiency in accounting software and practices, as well as general knowledge of medical insurance billing.
